Devices : Mobile Viruses

    Author: Craig
Subject: Mobile Viruses
Posted: 19 Nov 2008 at 5:27pm

I think one of the mental traits of someone who writes virus code is that they are out to prove a specific point. We are always seeing people trying to prove security vulnerabilities in the latest Windows patch or OS. We see people deliberately targeting Microsoft because they are Linux Fanboys. We will see people targeting new upcoming environments like Android "just to prove it can be done".

I've read a few books on viruses and hackers. Most viruses are not malicious in the sense of "I want to make as many people's lives as miserable as I can". Most of them are designed to prove one specific point - be it "I was the first to get through Windows Vista SP1 security patch XYZ", or "I proved a vulnerability before John in Arkansaw did".

I do agree with Tim, when devices become more intrinsically linked as payment mechanisms then there is more incentive to try and figure out a financial reason to do this stuff. We must consider though, organisations behind NFC, mPayment, mCommerce, etc are typically from banking and security backgrounds (e.g. smartcard / SIM manufacturers such as Gemalto) and they have many, many years of experience and many, many patents in technology that should prevent a lot of this.

I think given this, the security threats (broader than just viruses) are down to user behaviour (i.e. lack of care). In the same way that someone who emails their bank and credit card details, or responds to a "King Jobah from Nigeria wants to put $250k in your bank account" email will likely get fleeced, so will someone who has an e-purse set up with an obvious password, or leaves their phone on a pub table.

User Experience : iPhone Flash

    Author: Craig
Subject: iPhone Flash
Posted: 19 Nov 2008 at 5:12pm

In my mind, the one thing missing from the iPhone is a Flash player. Add this and nothing currently would offer the same web browsing experience.

Reading the flurry of press around Adobe preparing a Flash app, it has become very apparent that it may never make it to the market. Apple may never sign it off under App Store T's & C's due to it's overall power as a development environment.

As we all know, Apple like to control the core aspects of hardware and software. They even like to control the distribution of devices and software. Something like Flash will open up the ability for people to develop and distribute applications by simply posting them on a website, thus bypassing the controls within the App Store. All of a sudden all the apps that were never signed off would be accessible and this would cause Apple a major headache both commercially and control-wise.

A lot of this is speculation. For all I know Apple will partner with Adobe and produce an official Flash player as part of a iPhone update. Rumour-mills state that this is not going to happen because of the logic above.

Is this right and in the spirit of the industry ? Essentially they are putting barriers directly in the way of user experience for the sake of these kinds of controls. Adobe are able to do it, the device is capable of doing it, the user community all wants it to happen, yet the business that can make it happen will not. Surely the fleet-of-foot Open Source environments will start out-accelerating these kinds of lock downs.

One example of this is cashless payment services (such as [NFC] near field communications-based technologies). In these instances, the handset takes on an 'wallet' persona, storing credit and providing a link to your bank account. Almost immediately there's financial motive to maliciously attack a device.

Edited by deluca_smith - Yesterday at 9:34am
